History
Founded in 1988 by community-minded leaders, the Okoboji Foundation was created to improve quality of life throughout the Iowa Great Lakes region. The Foundation awarded its first grants in 1989, with Berkley Bedell serving as its first Board Chairman.
In 2006, the organization became the Okoboji Foundation and officially began serving as a Community Foundation.
Today, the Okoboji Foundation invests in the future of our community through arts & culture, economic development, lake quality & environment, and outdoor recreation—creating lasting impact through the generosity of our donors.

Mindy Gress, CFRE
President

Mindy Gress has served as a nonprofit executive since 2008 and has been President of the Okoboji Foundation since 2020. A Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), she is passionate about helping people create lasting community impact through generosity and meaningful connections throughout the Iowa Great Lakes region.
Mindy is known for her relationship-driven leadership style and her passion for inspiring generosity across generations. She and her husband, Adam, are raising their three children in the Iowa Great Lakes area, where faith, family, and community are at the center of their lives.
Alison Schmitz
Administrative Director

Ali has been part of the Okoboji Foundation team since 2019 and currently serves as Administrative Director. In her role, she oversees data services, financial reporting, and coordination of the Foundation’s Youth In Philanthropy (YIP) initiative, helping inspire the next generation of philanthropists in the Iowa Great Lakes region.
Known for her warmth, positivity, and strong community relationships, Ali is a trusted and valued presence throughout the Lakes area. Outside of work, she and her husband, Brad, are raising their three boys and enjoy sports, adventure, and spending time outdoors together.
