The Waterway Restoration Project will restore the health, function, and connectivity of Paddler’s Path and Wilderness Way, the central corridors of the Wahpeton canal system and a critical link between Turtle Lake and West Lake Okoboji. An extension of the Turtle Lake restoration effort, this project will dredge the waterways to return depths from the current 2–4 feet back to their original 6–8 feet, significantly improving water circulation and overall system performance. The restoration will enhance water quality, strengthen aquatic habitat, reduce sediment flow into West Lake Okoboji, and increase opportunities for public recreation including fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. By revitalizing these essential waterways, the project will help protect the long-term sustainability of the watershed while preserving the environmental, recreational, and economic vitality of the Iowa Great Lakes region for residents and visitors alike.
